I still have the third issue of Euphorbia World 2008 on my desk while I write this letter. The journal arrived late – but I think it was worth while waiting. If you think so, too, please tell others, because the IES still needs more members. However, if you do not think so, tell me! And I will try to do better next time.

Issue 1 of 2009 is almost ready – almost, because work on the printing document is finished but the file has not yet been sent to the printers.

Still you might like to know what to expect in issue 1 of 2009 (being the fifth year of the publication). These are the topics:

- Powdery mildew of succulent Euphorbia, by Thomas Brand

- In cultivation: Euphorbia nana Royle (syn. E. panchganiensis Blatt. & McCann ex Blatt), by Christian Kunath

- How did I become a Euphorbia fan?, a member's portrait by Dick Hoey Smith

- An epiphytic Euphorbia echinus Hook.f. & Cosson in the Anti Atlas of Morocco, by Keith Bensusan & Brian Lamb

- In Habitat, Rikus van Veldhuisen took part in an exciting feld trip to South Africa for the PBI project in late 2008. With his beautiful pictures he invites us to join him on this journey.

- Variation in Euphorbia françoisii Leandri, by Walter Minuth

- Tissue culture propagation of Euphorbia mosaica P.R.O.Bally & S.Carter, a rare Euphorbia from Somalia, by Peter Krogstrup & Jens I. Find

- Euphorbias from A to Z, by Volker Buddensiek

If you want the read these articles as soon as possible, there is one simple thing to do: Pay your subscription fee right now and do not put it off another day! The sooner we have your subscription, the sooner you will get your journal!

So much experience to be shared

Issue 4(3) of the Euphorbia World will be printed in February and sent to members as soon as possible. Now my focus turns to the three issues to be filled in 2009. While we had very interesting articles in 2008, my impression is that too many of these come from members of the committee and a small number of persons who contribute more or less regularly. On the other hand there are but a few IES members who have started to write about there experiences in the cultivation and propagation of euphorbias – although I am convinced that there is a wealth of profound knowledge within the IES membership.

I would like to have this knowledge distributed to all members through the Euphorbia World journal. This doesn't have to be multi-paged articles, - small pieces with short texts and one or two pictures might be enough to tell others how you keep your plants and how you propagate them.

The editor is willing to support you in every way as is the entire committee. So, if you have any ideas, that you would like to share with other members, please contact me at post@volkerbuddensiek.de and help to make the journal even more interesting and diversified than it is today.

Message from the Chairman

The IES will celebrate its 4th birthday in January 2009 and we will have produced 12 issues of Euphorbia World. Current renewed membership is around 230 worldwide. If you are currently a member, I am sure you have found the journal informative and interesting, so please tell your friends! In order to keep subscription rates at an affordable level, we need more members! If each one of you found just one new member, we would have much more money available to organise further events and publications.

Also remember that the society offers a seed list. Good seed of euphorbias is hard to come by, so help us build this resource by supporting the IES seed bank by purchasing seed when available and donating spare seed.

Remember the IES is YOUR society. Help us to make it what you want it to be!

Best wishes
Alan Butler

Message from the Chairman

On 21st January 2006 the IES committee met and celebrated the society’s first birthday! We now have more than 270 members distributed worldwide in 34 countries. The first two issues of Euphorbia World, the society’s journal, have been sent to members and the third issue is already in an advanced state and should be printed in February. Please renew promptly as this saves us time which we can then spend on other matters.

You will notice several improvements in the new issues, and as the society grows we will have the resources to make even more improvements in the future and possibly to provide additional services for members.
